Life after "Life after Death".
The idea of Christian ressurection has been slightly misunderstood according to Wright in Simply Christian. Life after death is not being bodily alive after a period of being bodily dead. There is more to it than that. Rather, ressurection is life after "life after death". It is life after postmordem life.
I had no idea what this meant because I fell into the category that thought that when you died as a christan, you came back to life when Jesus returned. But I think I sort of understand the slight difference that Wright talks about.
The best example that I could think of "life after death" was immortality and never dying. Then I remembered that if I was immortal, I would cause too much chaos and commit too much evil. Then I thought of what if you would not die from disease and stuff but only from extreme situations and I gave up because it made no sense. Then the image of Buddhism's reincarnation came into my head. What if everytime you died, you came back as a human being (say you had really good karma). I think this isn't a bad image of what ressurection has been misunderstood to be. Even though we think that it would be better, the terms life after death only refer to coming back to the same kind of life.
Just imagine coming back from the dead because you had died in the black plague to experience the trenches in WWI and then Hitler's Nazi Germany and then Vietnam and the Cold war and all those things. This is why I believe in life after life after death. Because coming back to life isn't enough. I need a new life beyond this one. A full and complete human being. There is something terribly wrong with this life and this world and I don't think I would want to come back even though I never want to die and stop existing.
So the life that Jesus offers us is life beyond life after death. It is much fuller than I have been lead to understand. It is life to it's fullest.
That's what I gathered from what he said...
