I hate sunday school. I've been thinking of not going anymore. Apologies to John Lai if he reads this but it's not entirely his fault. It's the entire sunday school model. Sunday schools always teach the same material over and over again so by the 23rd year in, it gets unbelievably dreary. Over the years I've made some observations so here it goes:
1) Sunday schools are taught in a lecture/Q&A format with the teacher holding the knowledge
2) Materials are purchased from companies who produce them and are seldom relevant to the group of students
3) Materials generally follow two formats (Topical or Book study)
4) Materials hardly ever have any depth or intellectual value
5) Teachers are often volunteers with little training
6) Materials and teachers often come with one theological perspective (evangelical)
7) The majority of questions are observation questions where students have to read and explain an event
8) The other questions are application which guide students to a few select applications
9) The answers are ridiculously obvious
10) Because of (9), students are rarely engaged
11) The other reason students aren't engaged is due to the teachers' single theological perspective and the power relationship in the class
12) Learning more and repetitive learning does not change my life to love God or others more.
Based on these observations, I learn nothing from class. It is such a chore to sit there for 1 and a half hours listening to the same old nonsense being spout since I was 5. In defense, there is a place for sunday school and I would not have the basis I have now if it wasn't for Sunday school but honestly, am I going to sit through those classes til I am 50?
So there you go, I plan to not attend anymore unless there is a class that interests me. I would benefit more from reading a book or volunteering in the neighbourhood. Sunday school is such a joke with it's pathetically easy questions. I'm not 5 anymore.
